Jekyll Island Club Resort
Glynn County, Georgia
Overview
The Jekyll Island Club Resort, built in 1887 and a member of Historic Hotels of America® since 1993 was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Historic Hotels of America is the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation® for recognizing and celebrating the finest historic hotels across America. Nestled on a barrier island off the Georgia coast, the Jekyll Island Club opened in 1887 as a hunting retreat for America's wealthiest families. Here, millionaires wintered in scenic seclusion until the onset of World War II when the property was abandoned. Restoration in 1986 revealed the club's original beauty and elegance, qualities that exude in abundance from the leaded art glass, ornate woodwork, and Rumford fireplaces. From the lofty tower to the encircling verandas and original heart pine floors, Victorian charm still permeates the public areas and rooms once occupied by the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Astors, and Morgans. In 2003, Jekyll Island was named one of America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
